This sermon continues a series examining four reasons Jesus gave in the Gospel of John for why he came from heaven to earth. The pastor reviews two previously covered purposes — that Jesus was sent by the Father to save the world rather than condemn it, and that he came to give eternal life — before introducing two new purposes. The third purpose is that Jesus came to present the standard by which the world will be judged, illustrated through the healing of a man born blind and the contrasting responses of faith and hardened unbelief. The fourth purpose, revealed during Jesus’ trial before Pontius Pilate, is that he came to testify to the truth. The sermon draws a sharp contrast between the world’s shifting, relativistic view of truth and the absolute truth Jesus embodies and proclaims. It closes with a call to decision: will we submit to Jesus and his words, or will we insist on our own way?
