5-Day Devotional: Roadside Assistance – God’s Provision in Our Breakdowns
Day 1: God Is Our Refuge
Reading: Psalm 46:1-7
Devotional: Life’s journey includes unexpected breakdowns—moments when everything seems to stop and we find ourselves stranded on the shoulder of life’s highway. The psalmist reminds us that God is not distant during these times; He is our refuge and strength, an ever-present help in trouble. Notice the phrase “ever-present”—God is already there before we even realize we need Him. When the dashboard lights of your life start flashing warning signals, your first call should be to Jesus. He doesn’t scold or criticize; He covers you like a mother hen protects her chicks. Today, identify one area where you feel broken down. Instead of trying to fix it alone, tell Jesus. Speak honestly about your struggle, knowing He is your safe place, your refuge in the storm.
Day 2: Don’t Bear Burdens Alone
Reading: Galatians 6:1-5
Devotional: Pride often keeps us silent when we’re struggling. We convince ourselves that we should handle everything alone, that asking for help is weakness. But Paul’s instruction is clear: “Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ.” The law of Christ is the law of love—sacrificial, vulnerable, and authentic. One hand cannot wash itself; it needs the other hand. Similarly, we need each other to navigate life’s difficulties. The beauty of Christian community is that we’ve all been broken down at some point; we’ve all needed rescue. Today, practice vulnerability. If you’re struggling, reach out to a trusted believer and share your burden. If you’re in a season of strength, look around—who needs you to come alongside them?
Day 3: Be the Good Samaritan
Reading: Luke 10:25-37
Devotional: The priest and Levite had religious credentials but lacked compassionate action. They saw the broken man and changed lanes, speeding past to avoid inconvenience. The despised Samaritan, however, stopped, sacrificed his time and resources, and got his hands dirty. Jesus tells this story to challenge our selective compassion. As you travel life’s highway, are you so focused on your destination that you miss the wounded on the roadside? Being roadside assistance means slowing down, noticing the worn faces around you, and responding with sacrificial love. It means getting your knees dirty, spending your resources, and making yourself vulnerable to help another. Today, ask the Holy Spirit to open your eyes to someone who is broken down. Then take action—visit, call, pray with them, offer practical help. Don’t just drive by.
Day 4: Comfort With the Comfort You’ve Received
Reading: 2 Corinthians 1:3-7
Devotional: Your past breakdowns are not wasted experiences—they’re preparation for ministry. Paul teaches that God comforts us so that we can comfort others with the same comfort we’ve received. Your struggles have given you empathy, understanding, and credibility to help someone facing similar challenges. You know what it feels like to be stranded, afraid, and uncertain. You remember the relief when someone showed up to help. Now you can be that person for another. The gospel isn’t meant to be pristine and distant; it has dirty, naked feet that walk alongside the hurting. Your testimony of God’s faithfulness during your breakdown can bring hope to someone currently stranded. Today, reflect on how God has helped you through difficult times. Then consider who might need to hear your story of His faithfulness.
Day 5: Rescue the Perishing
Reading: James 2:14-17
Devotional: Faith without works is dead. It’s insufficient to see someone broken down and simply say, “I’ll pray for you” without offering tangible help. James challenges us to put faith into action. Fanny Crosby’s hymn echoes this call: “Rescue the perishing, care for the dying, snatch them in pity from sin and the grave.” This isn’t about being gullible or enabling dysfunction—it’s about choosing compassion over judgment, action over apathy. When someone is stranded, they don’t need a lecture on why they should have maintained their vehicle better; they need help getting moving again. As you conclude this devotional series, commit to being active roadside assistance in God’s tow truck network. Look for opportunities to weep with those who weep, mourn with those who mourn, and practically demonstrate Christ’s love. Remember: when you break down, God is your refuge and His people are your roadside assistance. Be that for someone else today.
