Weekly Sermon Devotional

5-Day Bible Reading Plan and Devotional Guide

Theme: The God-Man Who Prays — Knowing and Imitating Jesus Christ

Day 1: The Word Who Was God

Reading: John 1:1-18

Devotional: Before Bethlehem, before creation, before the beginning itself, Jesus existed. John opens his Gospel not with a birth narrative but with an eternal declaration — the Word was with God and was God. This is not a supporting character in history. This is the Author of history stepping into it. The same hands that flung stars into place were wrapped in swaddling cloths. Meditate today on the staggering reality that the God you pray to is not distant or unknowable. He entered your world. He knows your world. Let that truth anchor your faith and deepen your worship.

Day 2: Truly God, Truly Man

Reading: Philippians 2:1-11

Devotional: Paul does not allow us to settle for a diminished Jesus. Though Jesus possessed the fullness of God, he did not grasp at that equality for his own advantage. He emptied himself, took on human flesh, and walked among us as a servant. This is the great descent — not a reluctant one, but a willing and purposeful one. The God of all glory chose humility. He chose you. Examine your own heart today. Where is pride still enthroned? Where has self-interest crowded out compassion for others? The call is clear: have the same mind that was in Christ Jesus.

Day 3: A High Priest Who Understands

Reading: Hebrews 4:14-16

Devotional: The writer to the Hebrews makes a remarkable pastoral claim: Jesus was tempted in every way as we are, yet without sin. His hunger in the wilderness was real. His anguish in Gethsemane was real. His grief at the tomb of Lazarus was real. He did not perform weakness — he inhabited it. This means that when you approach God in prayer, exhausted and barely finding words, you are not approaching a God who is unmoved by your condition. You are approaching one who has felt what you feel. Draw near with confidence. The throne of grace is open to you precisely because Jesus stood where you stand.

Day 4: The Humility That Transforms

Reading: Matthew 11:28-30

Devotional: Jesus describes himself as gentle and humble in heart. This is not a posture he adopted for public appearances. It flowed from the very core of who he is. He who sustains the universe invites the weary to come and find rest in him. True humility is not self-deprecation — it is an accurate understanding of who God is and who we are in relation to him. When we walk in humility, we walk in step with Christ. Today, consider one area of your life where pride or self-reliance has kept you from leaning fully on God. Lay it down. Take up his yoke instead.

Day 5: Compassion That Moves to Action

Reading: Matthew 9:35-38

Devotional: Jesus looked at the crowds and felt compassion — not pity from a distance, but a deep, visceral moved-ness that led immediately to action. He healed. He taught. He fed. He wept. His compassion was never theatrical. It was the natural overflow of a heart wholly surrendered to the Father and wholly present to the people before him. Paul calls us to take an interest in others, not only in ourselves. The sermon reminds us that imitating Christ is not a lofty, unreachable ideal — because Jesus was also man. Ask God today to give you eyes that see people as Jesus saw them, and a heart willing to respond.
