Our Story

In the heart of the island with the island at heart

How it all started

St Joseph Island Free Methodist Church has been serving St. Joseph Island for more than 125 years. In 1895, a small group of island families gathered in a local schoolhouse to hear the Gospel, and before long, they built a church where people could worship, grow in faith, and experience the love of Jesus together.

What began with just a handful of believers has grown into a vibrant church family. Many of the descendants of those original families still worship here today; a powerful reminder of God's faithfulness across generations.

Today, we continue that same mission: helping people on St. Joseph Island and beyond discover the hope, grace, and truth found in Jesus Christ.

Expanding the vision

As our congregation grew, so did the need for a space that could better serve our community.
In 2000, the church stepped out in faith to build a new, fully accessible facility; not simply for a larger building, but to create more opportunities for ministry and welcome more people.

Through prayer, generous giving, and countless volunteer hours, the church was completed debt-free in just over five years. It stands today as a testimony to God's provision and the faithfulness of His people.

Our building may have changed, but our purpose remains the same:
to be a welcoming, Bible-believing church where lives are transformed by Jesus.

Where we are headed

While we're grateful for our history, we're even more excited about the future.

Our mission is simple: to make disciples who worship, pray, care, and serve.

We want to be a church where people of every age and stage can encounter Jesus, build meaningful relationships, and grow in their faith. Whether you've lived on St. Joseph Island for years, are new to the area, or are simply looking for a church to call home, you'll find a welcoming community here.

Our story isn't finished. God is still at work, and we'd love for you to be part of the next chapter.
